# Oracle Discoverer to Power BI Migration

**White Paper**

A US manufacturer of digital inkjet production systems needed to move off Oracle Discoverer, its unsupported reporting tool, without the internal staff to run a migration project. ennVee used its ennSight accelerator to automate the Discoverer to Power BI migration: extracting 200 Discoverer workbooks and worksheets, converting them to Power BI, and adding new dashboards and visualisations. With most of the work delivered offshore, the project cut the overall timeline, cost and resources by 50%. The client retired Discoverer with no rebuild, no data loss and no disruption to the business.

What are the key highlights from this case study

- How ennSight automatically identifies and extracts Discoverer reports, business areas, folders, workbooks and SQL
- The step-by-step Oracle Discoverer to Power BI migration process
- How to turn migrated Discoverer reports into Power BI dashboards
- Why Power BI is the preferred Discoverer replacement in 2026, including for organisations already on SSRS

## The challenge: extending the value of Oracle Discoverer

The client supplies digital inkjet production solutions to professional print operations across North and South America, and is known for the quality of its systems and components for the graphic arts industry. It runs its back-office operations on Oracle E-Business Suite R12, with Oracle Discoverer for business analysis and reporting.

Discoverer was no longer supported, but it held years of reporting logic the business relied on. The client wanted to carry that investment forward and extend its analytics, not start again.

The constraints were tight: the migration had to be efficient in time, cost and effort, and the client's internal team had no capacity to run the project. ennVee therefore proposed an automated migration, managed largely offshore, to keep consulting costs down and halve the overall duration.

**Key requirements**

- Extract reports and their associated elements from Discoverer
- Migrate 200 Discoverer workbooks and worksheets to Power BI
- Build Power BI dashboards and visualisations for the migrated reports

## Our approach: automated Discoverer to Power BI migration with ennSight

ennVee used [ennSight](https://ennvee.com/accelerators/oracle-discoverer-migration-tool/), its Discoverer migration accelerator, to automate the migration end to end. ennSight extracted the Discoverer workbooks and worksheets automatically and migrated them to Power BI, so no report had to be rebuilt by hand and no data was lost.

User access information was extracted intact and handed to the client. Report owners could then see who used each report and share the new Power BI reports with the right people.

ennVee also set up a fully integrated migration environment for the project.

**The Discoverer to Power BI migration process**

The migration followed five stages, each with a built-in check. If a check failed, the issue was fixed and the step re-run before moving on.

### Initiation

Pre-install and software setup
Software installed; UI credentials complete

### Assessment

ennSight scans the Discoverer environment
Assessment complete; issues fixed and re-run

### Post-assessment

List of business areas, folders and workbooks produced; users integrated
Users and objects validated

### Execution

SQL generated for each workbook
SQL files generated in the destination path

### Deployment

Reports migrated, Power BI UI built, new reports deployed
Migration verified; transition complete

Once the report details were extracted, ennVee worked with the client team to enhance the visualisations in Power BI to meet their requirements. The Service Request Billing report below shows the result: a row-level Discoverer report became a Power BI dashboard, with charts alongside the detailed data.

The converted reports were production-ready after one round of unit testing by ennVee and system testing by the client team.

## Results: 50% less time, cost and effort

The client retired Oracle Discoverer and moved its reporting to Power BI without rebuilding reports or losing data.

50% reduction in overall migration timeline, cost and resources

200 Discoverer workbooks and worksheets migrated through automated extraction

No rebuild and no data loss after migration

Lower report development costs going forward

Fewer reports to maintain, as the migration consolidated the report estate

Zero business disruption, with accurate analytic reports available immediately

**Example: Service Request Billing report in Discoverer and Power BI**

The screenshots below show the same report before and after migration. In Discoverer, Service Request Billing was a static table filtered by date range. In Power BI, the same data appears as an interactive table with charts showing amount and quantity by type, incident counts, and quantity by party, plus filters business users can change themselves.

The same Discoverer data, migrated to Power BI and extended with visual analysis.

## Why Power BI is the right Discoverer replacement in 2026

**For Discoverer users, Power BI covers both kinds of report they depend on:**

- Detailed, row-level reports. Power BI paginated reports produce fixed-layout, printable output, the closest match to classic Discoverer worksheets such as invoice registers and GL listings.
- Analysis and dashboards. Interactive reports, like the Service Request Billing example above, let users filter, drill down and spot trends without asking IT for a new report.

**Power BI also fits the way Oracle E-Business Suite customers work:**

- Your Oracle data stays where it is. Power BI connects to Oracle databases, so reporting can move without changing your ERP.
- A smaller, cleaner report estate. An ennSight assessment shows which Discoverer reports are still used, so you migrate what the business needs and retire the rest.

## **Frequently Asked Questions**

Can Oracle Discoverer reports be migrated to Power BI?

Yes. Discoverer workbooks and worksheets can be migrated to Power BI, either as paginated reports that keep the original layout or as interactive reports and dashboards. In this project, 200 Discoverer workbooks and worksheets were migrated.

How long does a Discoverer to Power BI migration take?

It depends on the number and complexity of reports. With automated extraction through ennSight and mostly offshore delivery, this client halved its overall migration timeline.

Do we have to rebuild our Discoverer reports from scratch?

No. ennSight extracts the reports, SQL and business areas from Discoverer automatically, so report logic carries over. In this project, no report needed an additional rebuild after migration.

Can we keep using Oracle E-Business Suite after moving to Power BI?

Yes. Power BI reports on Oracle data directly. Only the reporting layer changes; your ERP stays as it is.

Do users keep access to the reports they had in Discoverer?

ennSight extracts user access details from Discoverer, so report owners know who used each report and can share the new Power BI reports with the same people.
