About the Client

The client is a prominent provider of senior living services, specializing in the development, ownership, and operation of Continuing Care Retirement Communities (CCRCs) – also known as Life Plan Communities – across multiple states in the US. With a rich history and a commitment to providing exceptional care, the client offers a continuum of living options, from independent living to skilled nursing, ensuring residents can age in place with dignity and receive the support they need.

Business Challenges

As part of a comprehensive Enterprise Transformation and IT Modernization initiative, the client strategically decided to migrate its JD Edwards EnterpriseOne 9.2 ERP system from its on-premises environment to the secure and scalable Microsoft Azure cloud. This strategic move aligned perfectly with the organization's overarching business continuity and security objectives.

Concurrently, the migration presented an ideal opportunity to upgrade to the latest 64-bit JDE EnterpriseOne Tools release and code set, unlocking significant performance enhancements and access to the latest innovations. Recognizing the need for a streamlined and standardized environment, the client also prioritized the removal of redundant custom environments and the implementation of data archiving and purging strategies to optimize system performance and reduce storage costs.

"Our upgrade went smoothly, and we were able to eliminate some unneeded customizations. I’m excited to be able to take advantage of the automations that the new toolset affords. "

- Nate Hauenstein, VP of IT Operations

Oracle JD Edwards Updates

Recognizing the significant advantages of modernizing their JD Edwards environment, the client strategically leveraged the cloud migration to perform a critical JDE Tools Release upgrade. This strategic move involved transitioning to the latest 64-bit release and code set, unlocking access to a wealth of enhancements, including improved performance, enhanced security features, and access to the latest innovations within the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne platform.

Migration to Microsoft Azure Cloud

Microsoft Azure was selected as the target cloud platform for this migration. This decision was driven by several key factors, including the client's prior positive experience with Microsoft technologies. Additionally, Azure's robust security and compliance features, including FedRAMP High Authorization, were highly appealing. Furthermore, Azure's seamless integration with Microsoft's comprehensive suite of database and Business Intelligence (BI) solutions proved to be a significant advantage.

CNC Support

ennVee provided comprehensive CNC support throughout the migration process. ennVee addressed critical license issues. A thorough review of the existing JDE 9.2 infrastructure and server architecture was conducted. The current CNC 9.2 environment strategy was also carefully analyzed and optimized. A robust and secure JDE 9.2 server infrastructure was built in a non-production environment. This included the installation of deployment servers, enterprise servers, Web JAS servers, and CNC workstations.

New Server Builds/ Update Tools Release

The non-production environment was prepared by installing JDE 9.2 on the deployment server, server manager, and enterprise servers. AIS/Orchestrator services were also configured. The JDE Tools Release was then successfully executed across all designated servers. Rigorous validation testing was performed to ensure the successful installation and functionality of all components. Live database schemas were copied from the existing environment and exported to the new JDE 9.2 database. PRODDTA and PRODCTL data were imported into the new database and subsequently exported to TESTDTA and TESTCTL for thorough testing. Finally, workbench processes were prepared and executed to ensure the readiness of the development environment.

Go-live & PY Environment Creation

A deployment package was built and deployed to CNC Fat clients and enterprise servers. JDE 9.2 64-bit and JDE web servers were thoroughly tested. JDE 9.2 was subsequently installed on development servers and third-party MTRs, ensuring the readiness of all JDE servers. A PY920 environment was created, incorporating retrofit objects from the development environment. CRPDTA/CRPCTL were rigorously validated.

Build/ Configure/ Go-live

JDE 9.2 was installed on the production-build environment. MTRs were reviewed, and the readiness of all JDE servers was confirmed. JDE 9.2 was then installed on enterprise servers. The 9.2 database package was successfully loaded. JDE 9.2 was subsequently installed on web servers. The installation planner was executed, followed by the installation and configuration of server manager.

The required set of ESUs/ASUs were installed. A production package was built and deployed. Fat client installations were thoroughly tested, and the language pack was successfully installed. JDE 9.2 production JAS web servers were installed and configured. Central objects were meticulously copied from the 32-bit environment to the 64-bit environment. Kernels were fine-tuned for optimal performance. SYS, DD, and OL data were migrated from the non-production database to the production database, followed by a full build in the production environment. Finally, the successful go-live was achieved, followed by ongoing production support.

ennVee Solutions for Specific Requirements

The ennVee team implemented several key solutions to address the specific requirements of this project:

  • The JDE EnterpriseOne 9.2 system was successfully upgraded to the latest 64-bit Tools Release (9.2.8.2).
  • The JDE EnterpriseOne 9.2 system was brought to ESU Code Current, ensuring access to the latest security patches and performance enhancements.
  • ArcTools was strategically selected as the archiving solution to enable the retention of the last 10 years of critical data while optimizing storage space. The solution is fully implemented, and the final archiving in Production can be scheduled at any time.
  • Azure Data Migration Services (DMS) was effectively leveraged for the data migration process. This streamlined the migration process, ensuring a flawless execution and enabling a go-live within 6 hours, well within the approved 12-hour downtime window.
  • The utilization of Azure's internal load balancer services eliminated the need for purchasing expensive third-party load balancing solutions.
  • The renewal of certificates within the Azure environment was a streamlined and efficient process.
  • Close collaboration between the client and ennVee ensured the appropriate selection and sizing of all hardware components, ensuring optimal scalability for all servers.
  • To optimize resource utilization and reduce costs, a script was developed to automatically start and stop non-production databases and related servers based on business requirements, allowing users to easily control resource consumption.

Benefits of Enabling 64-bit

The transition to 64-bit processing provided several key advantages for the client. By leveraging the 64-bit architecture, the client maximized the potential of their existing JD Edwards environment.

This transition also future-proofed their JD Edwards investment by mitigating the risks associated with hardware and software obsolescence inherent in 32-bit technology. Furthermore, the 64-bit migration paved the way for seamless adoption of future JD Edwards product enhancements and innovations.

Notably, significant performance improvements were observed, including enhanced interactive response times and faster batch processing runtimes. Finally, the 64-bit transition enabled seamless operation on modern 64-bit platforms, optimizing system performance and efficiency.
